Don Gorman

Sadly, I pass the news of the death of Don Gorman, HMCS, USN (1967-68), 2751 Warmouth Lane, Kissimmee, FL, 34744.  Don was to our Reunion in Las Vegas in 2003.  I was not aware of an illness, although you who were there may remember that he was motoring around in a power wheelchair.  I had sent to him one of the many Red Neck Jokes that we used to exchange.  His son informed me of his death.  This is a link to Don's Obit [ Off-Site link to Orlando Sentinel archives ]

Nick Picconi

Nick Picconi QM1 passed away in the year 2004. If anyone has any other info on his passing or him, please let me know. I received the following information about Nick from a friend that has been in contact with a family member:

In High School he was an accomplished gymnast and was a 3 yr varsity letterman. He first joined the Navy after high school (rather then be drafted in the Marines or Army). He served for 4yrs and did a tour in Vietnam and aboard the USS Gridly DLG21. Nick had been living up in Oregon near his brother Jody....he bought a home around Laughlin, NV and Jody and his younger brother Shane helped Nick make the move. Nick was having back problems and wasn't able to help much in the loading and unloading of the truck and sometime during or just after the truck was unloaded he actually passed out. After seeing the doctor it was determined that Nick was suffering from advanced liver cancer and passed away within 6 mo of the diagnosis. Nicks sister Jeaneen also passed away from cancer in '98......they are survived by Mother Jeanie, father Joseph, brothers Joseph Jr. (Jody) & youngest brother Shane.

Two deaths prior to homecoming for Sammy G to Alameda CA. In Hong Kong , an adult male drowned in his hotel room and a young adult 19-year-old female aboard Sammy G died on June 29, 1990 , while underway in route to Hawaii.  Although I had planned a vacation back to Guam with the young woman earlier, instead I became her HR escort… a rather sad return to native soil - a US Navy official temporary duty assignment.

In Honolulu, my Fourth of July was spent waiting for an airlift, via US Air Force, for her casket and me the following day; a daughter bringing another daughter home.  This was my most memorable yet remarkable naval homecoming back home to Guam while assigned to the Sammy G.
